I am from Trieste, a seaside city at the northeastern edge of Italy. Built on the slopes between the Adriatic and the Karst Plateau, it was once the Habsburg Empire’s main port before becoming part of Italy after World War I. I may be biased, but it really is a sight to behold.

The early years

I spent my first 16 years in Trieste and might have become one of those people who never leave their hometown had it not been for AFS Intercultura. At 16, I received a full scholarship to spend a year in Québec, where I quickly had to become fluent in French and adept at dressing for the cold.1 By the end of the year, I had fallen in love with Québec and its culture; returning to Italy was an even bigger shock than leaving for Canada had been. After graduating from high school the following year, I was dead set on moving back to the True North (strong and free) to continue my studies there.2

I ended up attending the Cégep of Saint-Hyacinthe for a three-year program in management informatics. Looking back, attending Cégep was a somewhat random choice — I simply did not know any better at the time. My two main interests were understanding how computers worked and exploring game theory.3 The program was highly practical and taught me a great deal about software engineering, although I had to take mathematics electives to avoid falling behind on that front. During my time at Cégep, I got my first work experience at the college technology transfer center, played some music, and got involved in the local student union, first as event coordinator and then as president.4

There and back (in Europe) again

My final internship, a brief stint at Skytech Communications in Montréal, sparked my interest in AI and its applications. I then wrapped up my time overseas and returned to Trieste. My return coincided with the University of Trieste launching a new MSc program in data science5 in collaboration with institutions like SISSA and ICTP, so I had a plan. Despite struggling at times with gaps in my math and statistics training, it was great to be back home in Trieste, and I thoroughly enjoyed both my courses and the time spent with my classmates.

During the first year, I did a topic modeling project6 on the epistolary corpus of Italo Svevo, a popular author from Trieste. I instantly fell in love with all things NLP from that point on and spent the summer of 2019 avidly reading about Transformers and learning all about the new “huge” models Google and OpenAI had just released, BERT and GPT-2.7 Conveniently, the first-ever ACL conference in Italy was happening that year, so I could just hop on a train to Florence and enjoy my first-ever conference, at a time when 3,000 participants was an unprecedented record and we could still have proper dinners with tenors, ice cream, and fireworks.

I spent the last few months of 2019 in Pisa, working as a research assistant at the ItaliaNLP lab of the CNR-ILC on using eye-tracking data to study linguistic complexity in language models. This work later became my first paper (already using probes!) and an important part of my master’s thesis, “Interpreting Neural Language Models for Linguistic Complexity Assessment”.

We entered a national lockdown in March, cutting me off from most social contact just in time for the final push on my thesis. At that point, I knew that I wanted to pursue a PhD, but I had already collected a few rejections8 and was still looking for a position that felt like the right fit.9 COVID ultimately changed those plans, since I did not want to move countries and begin a PhD while curfews, social distancing, and mandatory remote work were still in place. I instead joined Aindo, Trieste’s first serious deep learning startup, shortly after my graduation. I was employee #2.

The PhD journey

2021 went by quickly while I was working on very diverse projects related to generative models, from medical information extraction with T5 encoder-decoders to sketch-to-image generation with StyleGANs. That summer, I accepted a PhD offer to work on interpretability for machine translation with Arianna Bisazza and Malvina Nissim at the University of Groningen. The position was affiliated with InDeep — a new Dutch consortium for research on deep learning interpretability — and Malvina assured me Groningen was the Dutch equivalent of Pisa,10 so I was sold.

I will not go through the four years I spent in Groningen in much detail here. Suffice it to say that, in retrospect, I am glad I picked Groningen over more prestigious alternatives in bigger cities for this phase of my life: the GroNLP macro-group was always extremely friendly and supportive, and the laid-back Groningen lifestyle gave me the peace of mind I needed to focus on my research. At the same time, the density of talented and ambitious researchers in the InCLoW micro-group set up by Arianna kept me engaged and motivated throughout my PhD.

Of course, the biggest perk of a PhD, aside from having time to really think through hard problems, is traveling to NLP and AI conferences. Between 2021 and 2025, I had lots of fun and many productive discussions in places like Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Miami, and Suzhou.11 One of these discussions was with David Bau, whom I met at EMNLP 2023 in Singapore to discuss the state of the interpretability tooling ecosystem. Our chat eventually converged on how academic incentives discourage the development of robust research tools that can be adopted by the whole academic community, a fact I experienced first-hand when building my Inseq attribution library.12 Before we parted ways, David handed me a box of 3D-printed aperiodic monotiles discovered earlier that year, which reminded me of my grandpa’s passion for symmetries in art and science. I ended up using them for the printed cover of my dissertation a year later.

I met David again at EMNLP 2024 in Miami, when he suggested I could come do my postdoc in his lab in Boston and contribute to making their (already great) open-source interpretability tools the standard in the community. Once again, the stars aligned to make a great opportunity come together, so I accepted the offer with pleasure and joined the Bau Lab at Northeastern in January 2026.

The rise of AI agents and Parallax

I will remember 2026 as The Year AI Agents Became Useful, the year I stopped coding in the traditional sense, and the year I changed my mind about a great many things.13 Working in AI in early 2026 felt like standing at the epicenter of a new era of work — one in which raw skills mattered less and wanting became an art to cultivate even more carefully. The onslaught of mindless AI slop made me acutely aware of the limitations of our current academic model and shared scientific commons. At the same time, renewed progress in AI made me question how I could put my knowledge and abilities to work and help steer the coming revolution in a positive direction.

That question eventually led my friend and colleague Mario Giulianelli and me to refocus our efforts on building Parallax, a London-based non-profit research organisation aiming to make white-box auditing of AI agents’ internal beliefs, goals and plans a standard component of frontier AI evaluations. Parallax feels like a natural convergence of the ideas that have shaped my work so far, bringing open infrastructure and scalable interpretability methods to practical use for de-risking deployments of increasingly capable and dangerous AI systems. I am especially excited about growing Parallax as an independent European center of expertise around these themes, to ensure our society is not caught unprepared by the disruptive changes ahead of us. With the help of Eric Medvet and Cristina Fenu, we set up a workshop titled AI-Italo Svevo: Letters from an AI, printing GPT-generated Svevo letters for more than 3,000 people over three intense days of work at Trieste Next.
